The introduction of female Autobots came in 1985’s The Search for Alpha Trion, an episode in the second season of the Generation One cartoon series. More and more cartoons in recent years, like Steven Universe and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, have made a conscious effort to introduce more LGBTQ+ characters.įor those unaware, the debate on sexuality and gender in the Transformers franchise has been ongoing since the ‘80s, with the franchise slowly introducing more and more new concepts on what Transformers can be beyond robots who turn into vehicles, appliances, and animals. This character has since been celebrated across social media platforms online, with those in the LGBTQ+ community seeing this as a positive step, especially for a children’s cartoon. The series is currently available on streaming through Paramount+, with later episodes seeing the introduction of Nightshade, the first on-screen non-binary Transformer who uses they/them pronouns. The two main Terran Transformers, Twitch and Thrash, find themselves being mentored by Bumblebee. This cartoon also sees the Autobots working together with a reformed Megatron, where they scour the Earth for any rogue Decepticons who are causing trouble.
